Ubuntu Netbook Remix doesn’t “just work”
I’m five days into my trip around Thailand with the Acer Aspire One I purchased specially for the trip and upon which I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Jaunty).
It’s been a pain in the arse the whole time.
These are the issues so far:
- No SD card automounting
- F-spot imports to $HOME instead of the Photos folder you specify
- ath5k driver is buggy (as we know) and filled /var/log with crap (hooray for partitioning forethought)
- Unison doesn’t sync vfat filesystems
- Can’t switch keyboard layouts
- Firefox bookmarks manager corrupts profile
Of course, all of these issues have either effective solutions or easy workarounds. But for joe user, or indeed linux-veteran-on-holiday, it’s not good enough.
A solid month’s use to iron out all the kinks before departing is recommended.
Lightning 0.9 for Linux PPC
I’ve updated my Linux PPC builds of Mozilla Lightning and Gdata Provider.
Works with Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 on Ubuntu Gutsy (LinuxPPC), including bi-directional syncing with Google Calendar.
